Brown School sixth grader, Cole Sawyer, celebrated his 12th birthday on 12-12-2012, and wanted to find a special way to mark the occasion. He set a goal of collecting 1,212 pounds of pet food, which he would donate to local animals in need, and asked local businesses and his peers at Brown School to help. Students and parents at Brown School watched the pet food and supplies pile up over the course of a month, and when 12-12-12 finally arrived, Cole was pleased to announce the results.
“I would like to thank everyone for helping me reach and even surpass my goal of collecting 1,212 pounds of pet food to donate to animals in need. Brown School students and families donated over a thousand pounds of pet food, along with many other items including paper towels, laundry detergent, cat litter, toys, and blankets. I would also like to thank the local businesses who donated to my cause including BJs, Sam’s Club, Checkerhill Farms, Head to Tail, and especially Hannaford. Hannaford set up a special display at their store in Niskayuna to allow people to donate pet food and other supplies. Their store collected 957 pounds of food. With all of this help, we were able to collect a total of 2,192 pounds of pet food. This food will be donated to SICM, the Schenectady Inter-city Mission, and to the Animal Protective Foundation of Schenectady. We are also donating 113 pounds of cat litter, 15 gallons of laundry detergent, and 70 rolls of paper towels.”
