Admissions Information

Why many parents choose Brown School

Brown School has the qualities most often associated with academic success. Our small class sizes, coupled with our individualized approach to learning, allow students to build self-confidence and realize their fullest potential in an atmosphere that is both challenging and nurturing.

Preschool 3- and 4-year old programs

The Admissions process for Preschool includes a tour of our school and a brief visit in the classroom. If your child is currently attending another preschool or daycare, a records release form may be requested. Applicants for the Preschool 3-year old program must be three by December 1st of the year of attendance. Applicants for the Preschool 4-year old program must be four years of age by December 1st of the year attending.

Preschool children must be toilet trained. Brown School reserves the right to evaluate students’ readiness for the Preschool and extended day programs.

Kindergarten

A child must be five years of age by December 1st to be admitted to Kindergarten. A half-day visit is encouraged for students interested in the kindergarten program. During the visit, social developmental readiness will be observed by the classroom teacher. If a child is attending or has attended another preschool or daycare program, a signed records release form is provided to Brown School for requesting records and an evaluation from the candidate’s current or previous school.

First through Fourth Grades

A child entering the First through Fourth Grade will be asked to spend a day at Brown School in the grade that he or she is currently attending. Records, including an evaluation of the applicant, are obtained from the candidate’s current or previous school.

First through Fourth Grade applicants are given individual assessments in the areas of mathematics, reading comprehension, and writing as part of the admission process.

Fifth through Eighth Grades

Fifth through Eighth Grade applicants are given individual assessments in the areas of mathematics and writing as part of the admission process. Records and evaluations are requested from the student’s current or previous school.

High School

High School applicants will spend a day at our school. Records and prior evaluations are requested. Enrollment decisions are also based on an interview with the parent(s) and/or the prospective student. Admitted students will be assessed for math skills and class placement, and the student will complete a writing sample. All decisions regarding admission are made by the Admissions Committee. Brown School reserves the right to admit students on a probationary basis.
