Brown School’s Block Building Curriculum is an important part of a student’s day. When children build together they problem-solve and form community in meaningful and satisfying ways.
Block building is important to young children’s cognitive, physical, and social-emotional development. Playing and creating with blocks offers children an opportunity to concretely represent and construct the world as they experience it.
Experimenting with unit blocks leads children to think in abstract and symbolic ways, and to collaborate and actively experience what it means to feel a part of a block-building ensemble.
Our teachers use established techniques for setting up and maximizing a special block-building area, a dedicated Block Room with an eye towards integrating teaching and learning across such domains as social studies, literacy, mathematics, and science.
